Monk

From Vanguard WikiSpheres

Contents

Description

Monks are masterful martial combatants with the ability to chain their martial attacks together in wide variety of ways to accomplish certain tasks. They can learn combat disciplines which alter their attacks in powerful ways, allowing them to strike with fists of fire, assume a stance that greatly increases their armor class and even teleport to and attack an opponent before he is even aware of the Monk's presence.

Mechanics

Jin

Jin is a mechanic shared by Monks and Disciples, allowing you to use your normal abilities to store up power and then unleash it in a spectacular effect. The Jin is a separate meter with a maximum that increases as you level higher. Your Jin abilities range from powerful attacks, to a group AE buff that makes each member's next melee attack devastating, to Secrets, which are covered further below.

You accumulate Jin by completing special attacks and through meditation. It dissipates over time if not used.

Secrets

Secrets are abilities unlocked with Jin usage that allow you to empower your fists and weapons with some sort of additional energy. Be it fire or ice elements or a special attack doubler, the Secrets are key to maximizing your damage output.

Attacks & Finishers

A great majority your persistent damage will be dealt through your general, damage dealing skills. These skills include both single target punches and kicks and a series of powerful Area of Effect (AoE) attacks that put you on par with the casters and their usual supremacy of AoEs.

Disciplines

As you level, almost every ability you learn will fall under one of the three major Disciplines. In addition to those gotten from your trainer, are special abilities learned by questing for one of the three Disciplines that are exclusive to that style of Monk. There are also several Disciplines that aren't of the three major ones that several special abilities fall with.

The Disciplines are:

Dragon
A hard style with plenty of high damage and AoE attacks.
Harmonious Body
A soft style specializing debuffs and attack redirection.
Drunken
A mixed style weaving between defense, counter attacks, and aggro control.

You get to choose your discipline at level 15. Your local instructor gives you the Beginning of Enlightenment quest, which send you to speak with Brithrax Lightstorm in Khal (outside of town to the west).

Utility

While a Monk doesn't have too much along the lines of utility, there still are several skills that fall under this category. One of which forces your opponent out of any focused stance they put themselves into. Several Jin abilities also technically count as Utility, but will still be labeled as Jin.

Meditation & Aum

Another concept unique to the Monk is Meditation, obtained at level 14. By meditating alone, a Monk can generate Jin passively without using physical attacks. Also available during meditation are various Aum techniques, which have two subcategories. The first of which are Discipline-oriented Aums that enable you to learn the various focused abilities each choice of Discipline offers. The second of which are hour-long self buffs that can't be stacked with other Aums.

Exploding Heart Technique

Of special note is the final level 50 skill that Monks obtain, which is in fact 3 separate moves set up in a combo of sorts. It is a massive damage-dealer, involving a stunning jab to the throat, a pound to the chest... and then the inevitable heart-squish Indiana Jones fans are well-acquainted with.
